So, I caved and bought the nested hexagon pans. I know, I know, why can't you just cut the corners off of square pans? Well, I would have to buy more square pans to cover the sizes I don't currently have. And I bought three 2" deep round pans--a 5", a 4", and a 3". They were just too cute to pass up. Yes, yes, I know, why can't I cut down a larger piece? Because when you cut a cake, you have a raw edge, as it were, where crumbs can escape. Also, the crust on the outside helps structurally. It does actually make a difference. And I bought some petal dust, for when I get around to playing with gum paste, and three of the four plates for the hex pans (because they were sold out of one). And some disposable decorating bags, for playing with chocolate. And a new purse, which I have now used for a day or so, and am not really liking very much. I may have to go back to Target since Wally's really doesn't have much in the way of useful purses. Cheap, yes. Useful, if you're me, no. And four boxes of Thin Mints from the scouts who were selling in the cold outside Wally's.
I failed, yet again, to get anything baked, although I now have hamentaschen recipes and five different kinds of filling (prune, poppy seed, cherry, raspberry, and apricot) in the Solo cans (so I won't have too much of any one kind) and I have six pounds of almond paste in the fridge so I could do almond if I wanted. I haven't decided yet if I should go with the pastry variety or the yeast dough variety or the cookie variety. Decisions, decisions.
The cat does not like being used as a keyboard rest. She's not yowling for attention anymore, but now that she's on my lap she expects to be petted. This is all Mikey's fault--Koska gets clingy when he's gone, and he was gone all yesterday and mostly all today, with a brief stop home to check email. I'm not sure if Iniki is any more clingy than normal when he's gone or not, mostly because she's not as loud. I think she may be her usual self, but when both of them want attention it seems like they are being clingy. She's probably just as bad when I'm gone as the black one is now. Ah, well. At least my lap is warm.
Although I did not actually get any baking done, I did start thinking about what I want to do for the weekend. The really cool cherry/chocolate thingy doesn't make enough, and although it wouldn't be hard to double the recipe, I would still have a problem finding the cherries. They're somewhere in the freezer, but then there are a lot of things that are "somewhere in the freezer". On a positive note, the freezer is now so full that I can't really get anything else in there, so there are a finite amount of things to eat our way through before reaching the things that are hiding. But I really should have grabbed my gloves before going looking for the chorizo (which, of course, I did not find...).
I did find more countertop in the kitchen, though, and everything that is going to goodwill is now in the truck, along with all the large empty boxes (which are going to a co-worker who is moving) that were cluttering up the dining room. Except for the box of glassware, because it is very cold out right now and I don't think the unheated back of a pickup truck driven by me is a good place for anything fragile to be spending its time. That's a full, unbroken (as it were) set of glassware, and I may ask around for anyone who needs a 30-piece set of glassware, gratis. But the dining room looks a lot better. I still have to find places for all the stuff on the table, and find a place to put the other table, which although in pieces is still mostly in the dining room, and then when the table is cleared off I have a place to put the knickknacks, so that I can move the shelves to their new home. And I am most definitely going to have help, for that one. I've moved a full-height bookshelf by myself, once, and it was not an enjoyable experience.
I also bought real glasses and an entire set of silverware at Target yesterday--the cabinet looks like an adult lives in my house. It's really quite impressive. Now I have to put away all the cake stuff that I bought.
I did dishes. I did some laundry--the clean sheets made it as far as the couch before they ran out of oomph. I got some sewing on the red wool dress done. I looked at the taxes again. I went grocery shopping--and bought actual produce this time--like plums, for a plum cake, since they were on sale--and fishies, which were dinner and mighty tasty. Pan-fried catfish fillets with a sour cream/dill sauce, one of those Lipton rice and sauce thingies--because it was there, and needed to be consumed, and we needed a starch--and swiss chard sauteed in oil with garlic and salt and then topped with toasted sesame seeds. It was a trifle salty, because I think we didn't have as much chard as the recipe called for (though it actually called for spinach in the first place, but I can't eat spinach unless it's cooked to death) and I put in the listed amount of salt, but other than that it was tasty. Then we went to Bridgeman's for dessert, because ice cream was necessary. Yes, it was 4 out, but we needed ice cream. And I managed to get out of bed before noon both days, even though it was warm and cozy and there was a sneaky treacherous cat snuggling next to me and purring. So some goals were reached, which is a good thing. Next weekend I have to wake up on Saturday because the chocolate tempering class is 10 or 10:30 in Burnsville, which is a good 10 minute drive from here on a good day.
