Red. Kinds of red. Other sorts of red.

The new car needs a spritz of that new-car smell that you can get in spray bottles, and you'd think it just came off the showroom floor. I told the boy that he needs to take pictures of it while it's still in pristine condition. And when I say pristine, I mean immaculate, untouched, the middle back seatbelt is still rolled up, there is no dirt anywhere on this car. Elderly couple, Florida vacation home car.
And it's not pink. When the ad said "Toreador Red", I had flashbacks to when Ang bought the replacement for the Justy, which was this odd light red/pinky-orange/coral-y salmon sort of color, with metallic flakes, that to me fit into the greater set of colors which are described loosely as "pink". Ang said the official name was "Barcelona Red". However, Toreador red appears to be a dark red of the sort which is not quite burgundy but definintely not the same color as my truck, either. A relief, certainly. Not that I could imagine the boy buying a pink car (and that I don't think Ford ever made the Escort in a pink) but you never know.
Red is such an odd color. If you take pretty much any other color and add white to it, you get a lighter version of that color--light blue, light green, light purple, light orange. With red, if you add white, you get pink, which is just not a light red. Ok, yes I know that most people call light purple "lavender", but if you say light purple, most people will also have a pretty good idea of what you mean. But light red? I have three tubes of Cadmium Red, Light, but that's accomplished by adding yellow/orange, instead of white. Also, the difference between Cad. red light and Cad. red deep seems to be that the deep is more saturated than the light, rather than the light being less saturated than the deep.
I would have called it "Coral Rose" or some such, rather than "Barcelona Red".
