I wonder how long it will be before it no longer feels odd to have my neck, especially my cervical spine, exposed while wearing my bike helmet? And no, I am *not* going to put a camail on it.

And do what with it? The helmet would be too big for it.

*snrk* it's a term for spinal protection for athletics like skateboarders :)

Ah.

I was briefly considering digging my gorget out of my armor bag...

Some of them have fabric or plastic hanging down behind to protect from sunburn, as do some hardhats, so a camail wouldn't be all that out of place ...

Yeah, but it would look weird.

I dunno. I think it might look kind of cool. :-)

When? When you stop riding...the helmet protects you from abrasions & lacerations, not contortions and extensions. Not to mention that anything that restricts your neck's range of motion is probably illegal if not unwise. Best to think of putting on the helmet like buying an insurance policy: fill out the form, sign it, send it to somebody who cares, but for God's sake, don't read it or you'll never ride...

You don't ride because you want to feel safe, you ride because you want to feel free :)

(And yes, a motorcycle has always been firmly on my "like" list, but it hasn't made to my "want" or "need" lists...yet.)

MN has no mandatory helmet law. I could wear an Elizabethan ruff iffen I wanted to.

The reason the bike helmet feels odd is because I am used to wearing a much heavier and longer helmet plus a leather and closed-cell foam gorget with an 8" 'tail' that covers my spine and runs down into the body armor. The barbute actually restricts my head movement a lot more than the gorget does.

An Elizabethan ruff'd make you /real/ memorable at the bike shop, purple hair or otherwise...

Kidding aside, do be careful out there.
