I think a lot of survivors and witnesses found it too horrible to talk about. When asked, my paternal grandfather always denied that he had been present when Dachau was liberated. However, my father later learned from other people that his father's unit was indeed there. Grandpa very rarely brought up any of his war experiences, but he would answer questions about it if asked. I suspect he couldn't bear to answer questions about Dachau. Imagine how much more difficult it must be for someone who lived there as a prisoner.
